The Strattons: Glasses for the Girl

Caily visited a Pediatric Opthamologist recently and it was discovered that she has some problems with her left eye. She will be wearing glasses to correct the problem, at this age there is still time to "fix" instead of "manage". In six or so months they will re-check her eyes to see if she needs surgery on her eye muscles. We hope to avoid that. She was a trooper at the office, although getting her eyes dilated was a very unpleasant and exhausting experience when your only four years old!

This is all very new to Rod and I, as we both have ideal vision (for now ;) So it was somewhat sad and difficult for us as parents to navigate something with her that neither of us have ever had to go through. Unfortunately the day after the eye visit she got violently ill, and her eyes remained dilated so she had to be placed on some Zofran to stop the constant throwing up. Basically she had a really rough week.

We took her in and told her basically she could pick any pair of glasses in the store she liked, no limitations, and if there was none she like we would go to another store. We wanted this to be as positive experience as possible and help her to like her glasses and know that she is still beautiful and smart as ever. We are now into day 2 after receiving the glasses and she is doing well. We have handled it much like potty training, its an uncomfortable and new experience and instead of nagging, I set the timer on my phone and if it goes off and she is wearing her glasses she gets to pick a skittle, gradually as she gets used to having them on her face the time in between the timer will decrease, but for now--we need to keep her motivated to wear the glasses.

Today she and I are going to the store to pick out some "glasses" (reading glasses without lenses) for me to wear. She is very excited that we will match; and my SIL, Maera mentioned that it may help her want to wear them.

She picked out plastic pink Disney glasses. They are cute.
